Design Like You Give A Damn

Fluffy Thoughts, Little Doodles

I have blogged her before but I will do it again because London based Kate Wilson from Little Doodles is a brilliant illustrator.

Here are some of my favourite Christmas themed bird pics. I don’t think they could be much cuter!

Along with illustrating Kate is an awesome photographer. Take a peek at her other blogs I, Bejeweled and The Wingtipper. Magic!

Once more, with feeling

Ughh! Getting everything ready for University is a prolonged nightmare with all the postal interruptions. I have filled in my loan forms and I need 3 pieces of identification and address verification. Also, I am waiting for my bank to send me 3 months of bank statements which is supposed to take 3 days but has so far taken 10.

Basically, every single step in starting this course has been lengthened x4, because of Royal Mail’s postal strike. Mail gets to my Frome address just fine… but London? Forget it! Apparently there is a black hole between here and the postal depot which means nothing is getting through!! I have resorted to getting everything sent to Frome and then sent special delivery by my Mum to me in London, as that’s the only thing they can guarrantee at this point. Efficient huh??

Mention anything postal related to me at the moment and I suddenly become super bitchy. I can’t help it. There is a massive chance that this strike is going to cause problems for me starting uni as I am expected to PAY my tuition fees 4 weeks before I start, as enrolment is the 7th January that makes my deadline December 14th.

Because of all the previous delays I have already had (it took me about 8 weeks to receive my loan forms) unless my statements arrive *now*, get sent on to Learn Direct and then immediately approved, and then by some MIRACLE the money is instantly cleared in my account in the next 11 days… I am screwed.

Again, I would like to say a big thank you to Royal Mail on the behalf of the whole of the UK. Of course I would have sent it in writing… but I actually wanted you to get this message before February -.-

McCain “Good Unlimited”

I just saw this on TV a moment ago and I am breaking my number one rule (I hate the ugly YouTube player and forbid myself from embedding it) just to share it with you.

It’s a look into McCain’s adorable potato product factory. The mere idea that there are sweet potatoes which are “hugged” with garlic and rosemary makes my heart melt…

…and my tummy rumble…

So now you can eat your chips, wedges and potato smilies and try to pretend they weren’t made in a factory that actually looks alot more like this than the enchanting factory in the video above. Sorry guys!!

Yellow Cake by Nick Cross

Political irony from Nick CrossYellow Cake – a lamentable tragedy mixed full of pleasant mirth”

If the cuteness of old cartoons like Silly Symphonies had a baby with Ren & Stimpy, and it sat down to tell the tale of western imperialism…. this would be it.

Luxirare – Bento Box

So some of you may know that when I am hungry I like to Google/Flickr my food cravings, it never helps to subdue my food wants, and it usually ends in me trying to make something elaborate for myself to eat.

Well, I have been reading Luxirare for a while and while some of her foods are probably a bit too rare or far too difficult for me to make, (like these crisps, sea urchin, this cake, this eggs benedict and this insanely elaborate avacado salad… but having said that, I am going to make these pie pops this weekend) I love this bento box.

3 delicious courses boxed up, including these jelly shots, a cobb salad (Bacon, cheese, lettuce, avocado and grilled chicken), teeny tiny sandwiches (Turkey, bacon, avocado, mayo) and a shrimp roll (chives, cucumber, soba noodles, carrots and fried egg ribbons), then banana, peanut butter and chocolate sandwich! Yummy yum yum.

When describing the recipe Luxirare says:

Are you a trust fund baby in your late twenties about to be cut off from your parent’s “flowing” bank account? Are you currently caught in a domestic dispute? Is your boyfriend texting you less? I have a little solution here that *might* work. Pack a lunch for that person. But be deliberate.

Using the archetype of traditional sushi rolls, I built a bento box (Japanese lunch with compartmentalized sections of food usually meticulously presented and wrapped) with three separate courses.

Take a look at some more of these pictures below and gaze in wonderment at the amount of detail that went into making this bento. Completely adorable!! It was so difficult trying to decide which pictures to blog, skip over to Luxirare to see the rest of them.

Sugar Paper

I found these amazingly cute Recipe and Stationary boxes over at Sugar Paper. I absolutely LOVE them and want them both!

But I can’t.

Mainly because the stationary set alone is $395.00 (£247), it includes 50 gold label bee note sets with white envelopes + honey comb liners, 50 gold label apple note sets with white envelopes + diagonal stripe liners, 100 note sheets bordered with gold and plain white envelopes, and a solid brass letter opener. Take a peek at these pictures, and marvel at their lovely little details.

The recipe box is less at $96.00 (£60) it’s crafted using raspberry lacquer and houses 100 recipe cards divided in six categories: breakfast, lunch, dinner, starters, sweets… and family recipes. The other problem is that they are all the way over in Los Angeles or you could guarantee I would have both of these beauties in my studio and my kitchen.

Timelapse – Los Angeles Wildfires

If wildfires weren’t so dangerous and destructive, I think it would be cute that this looks just like when you add milk to tea. <3

Wallace & Gromit – A Matter of Loaf and Death Pictures

Yay pictures!!

So, I was responsible for designing this range of products, print and packaging to accompany the release of the latest Wallace & Gromit animated movie “A Matter of Loaf and Death”. This is not all the products as there are actually about 40 different items in this first range (I’m working with Aardman on the 2nd range now)

As you may have read earlier this week, these designs have come highly commended in Gift of the Year Award 2009!

Take a peek at the pics over in my portfolio

I’ve been waiting to get my mitts on these pictures for a long time, as usually happens with designing products, I send off the print ready artwork and then with the production time involved, before you know it, it’s months before I get to see the final pieces.

I’m super pleased to have worked on this, and with the 2nd range now in progress which will include more ceramic items like teapots, eggcups, jugs, cheese and cake plates I hope it can be even better than the last one!

Fantastic Mr Fox – The Movie (!) By Wes Anderson!!

I LOVED the Fantastic Mr Fox stories when I was little, and you may remember me saying that my favourite movie director of all time is Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenembaums, The Darjeeling Ltd, Hotel Chevalier, Rushmore…) so you can guess my delight when I read that Wes Anderson is directing this stop-motion animated (There is nothing more magical than stop-motion, can this get any more endearing?) movie adaptation of Fantastic Mr Fox!!

AND as if that wasn’t good enough already, Bill Murray is in it! I’m so excited about it I broke my cardinal rule and embedded the hideous YouTube player just so you can all see it in HD. I caaaaan’t wait! ^_^
