Vivez le Langue

Some gorgeous typefaces at work here (if you’re pro try to name them all) to illustrate how to “live the language”, it’s the little details that suck you in, and for these 2 minutes I was in Paris and not sat at my desk working late.

The Mountain

So, as my long term readers here will know I am a mega fan of APOD, secretly I would love to be an astronaut, so you can see how this video ended up getting posted. Beautiful time lapse video of the star-lit sky as filmed from the top of a mountain. What more could a girl ask for?

“The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.”

The rest of the technical info is also posted over on the Vimeo page, and I strongly suggest you watch this in HD. Magic.

MTV “Balloons”

Director Dulcidio Caldeira put together this immensely technical video for MTV… to make the film, balloons were fastened onto a 200 meter long rail, and lined up via laser guide. “To achieve a moving picture effect, 10 balloons had to be popped per second, or 600 balloons per minute,” Caldeira says. “It took nearly 24 straight hours to shoot the multiple takes needed.”

Good Morning

Breakfast is the best meal of the day and to celebrate this fact (and get your juices flowing) here is a seriously beautiful video from Bruton Stroube Studios All of the most delicious breakfast foods… in slow-motion.

Shot primarily with the Phantom HD Gold at 1000fps, the piece is designed to showcase food in a beautiful and unusual way.

I don’t care if there was orange juice on the bacon, everything looks so yum you would have a serious battle trying to stop me from eating all of that in the end… even if it had been sat under lamps for a long time ^_-

Rio 2016

Insightful video above showing the design process and all the hundreds of iterations for the Rio 2016 Olympic logo… and its counterpart, the Telluride Foundation’s logo. The question is, was it really copied? Or was it a genuine accident that just developed into something similar out of mere coincidence. I mean, it isn’t identical? It could happen… couldn’t it?

There are some rather interesting observations of the logo here and here on Creative Review, so rather than just regurgitate what they have written click through and take a peek at what they’ve said. The comments are worth a look!

Flashing Lights

“Tell me something. And I will forget. Show me something. And I can remember. Involve me. And I will understand.”

In collaboration with Service Plan BMW came up with a pretty brilliant idea for an advert that you won’t be seeing on your TV any time soon.

They used flash projector technology to reproduce what happens when you look up at the sun, or see a flash of light: when you close your eyes, you see the contours of that light slowly fade away, in this case it was the logotype “BMW” cut from foam positioned behind the cinema screen.

Very clever, I think you will agree. (or as Vansken said “prepare for the colonisation of the land behind your eyelids”)

Above Everything Else

Prepare to have your mind blown!

Unbelievable though it is, every single frame in this video is CG… no live-footage or photographs in sight!! Absolutely astounding skills here, created by Alex Roman. It took two and a half months to make from start to finish form initial concept through to the final editing.

Hat tip to you sir!

Linotype: The Film

There are alot of people on my course looking into digital versus traditional print methods, so thought it would be a good idea to stick this up here for all to see!

This documentary is set to take a look at Ottmar Mergenthaler’s amazing Linotype typesetting machine and the people who own them. I’m really looking forward to seeing it.

Mark Ronson – The Bike Song

Spotted that the video for Mark Ronson’s new song “The Bike Song” came out while I was on my hols and you may remember me saying (if you follow me on twitter) that they had been filming the video on our street here in London. There was a big truck full of bikes parked up outside… though I didn’t spot Mark Ronson -.-

Had been waiting to see the finished product for a while now, I was not dissapointed. Directed by Warren Fu, same guy who made the awesome Bang Bang Bang video, there is a continuance from how that video had ended to how this video started. Awesomeness.

This new release has also become the theme for the London Get Cycling campaign… though I don’t see anyone in this video on those damn clunky Boris Bikes.

Also I’m 100% sure my bike is cooler than any of them in the video, way better than any ponsey Brompton! ^_- Introducing ‘The Red Menace’!

Paul Rand

“Without content there is no form, so without form there is no content…” the famous words of Paul Rand, and something I have had to look into for the final MA project. Hasn’t every designer had to study Paul Rand at some point?

I actually can’t wait to show you the outcome for this project, but it’d be a huge mistake to go ahead and talk about it before I’ve shown my tutor… juuust incase he tears me to shreds.
Having said that, I might just get impatient and sneak it to you anyway!

Found this Paul Rand retrospective video over at Vimeo, made by Imaginary Forces, they say:
For Paul Rand’s posthumous induction into The One Club Hall of Fame, Imaginary Forces created this short film, combining original animation with a videotaped interview of Rand himself, that encapsulated his unique and timeless contribution to the design community.
