Rio 2016

Insightful video above showing the design process and all the hundreds of iterations for the Rio 2016 Olympic logo… and its counterpart, the Telluride Foundation’s logo. The question is, was it really copied? Or was it a genuine accident that just developed into something similar out of mere coincidence. I mean, it isn’t identical? It could happen… couldn’t it?

There are some rather interesting observations of the logo here and here on Creative Review, so rather than just regurgitate what they have written click through and take a peek at what they’ve said. The comments are worth a look!

Good Design Advice

This good design advice site is similar to whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com but about design. There. That was a pretty straight forward explanation? I should have blogged this ages ago before it started accepting all kinds of stupid advice that was submitted… before, it was almost profound, now, not so much.

On a similar note, Comic Sans Criminal tries to teach the uninformed about the correct usage of Comic Sans.

What do you think is good design advice?

Bloom

Designed by Patrick Jouin and inspired by both the One_Shot.MGX stool and the natural beauty of flower blossoms, this table lamp features a shade which collapses and expands to release or contain different light intensities.

It’s incredibly complex but also wonderfully simple. I would love one of these lamps on my desk, but perhaps it is a bit out of my price range… for now ^_-

Flashing Lights

“Tell me something. And I will forget. Show me something. And I can remember. Involve me. And I will understand.”

In collaboration with Service Plan BMW came up with a pretty brilliant idea for an advert that you won’t be seeing on your TV any time soon.

They used flash projector technology to reproduce what happens when you look up at the sun, or see a flash of light: when you close your eyes, you see the contours of that light slowly fade away, in this case it was the logotype “BMW” cut from foam positioned behind the cinema screen.

Very clever, I think you will agree. (or as Vansken said “prepare for the colonisation of the land behind your eyelids”)

Everything That Counts

Beautiful print that puts everything in perspective around this time of year… and, well, the rest of the year too. If you get presents you don’t like this year, be nice, and appreciate that someone spent a long time choosing it for you. Worried about letting go this festive season and putting on a few pounds? Worry not! Embrace your holiday chub and look forward to feasting with family and friends.

Apparently this particular quote hung on a sign in Einstein’s office at Princeton, and I love it! If you are thinking of the perfect gift to buy your designer friend (or me, because I really want one) then look no further because I just did your xmas shopping for you*

*Not really. And you had better hurry, because there is only 11 days to go!

Ticking Boxes

MA [done]

I got my marks on Monday, as many of you may already know if you follow me on twitter I got a First Class Honours! Very very pleased, so much effort went into the creation of that end outcome I thought I might need to hibernate afterward. But thankfully my tutor loved it, and to quote him… “Your award is a reflection of a very successful project which was regarded very highly by the assessment team”
I feel incredibly lucky to have had my tutors help and expertise during the project, he’s obviously a very brilliant man with an extensive typographic knowledge, so he was the perfect choice to advise me during my particular studies. I feel a bit funny about mentioning his name here just in case he finds out and doesn’t like it…. so I wont.

But assuming that he will one day stumble across my blog and see this post, thank you so much for all your help, working with you was inspiring.

Meanwhile, job interviews-a-plenty. All over the place too! Kensington, Angel, Clapham, Westbourne Park, Covent Garden, Wimbledon… jeesh, there are many! I have a favourite, the job is perfect for me and I want to start working there really soon, and that is the last I am saying on the matter because I don’t want to get all excited to then change my mind/not get the job and then have a stupid irrelevant blog post on the internet forever.

I have another busy day tomorrow, my ‘exit tutorial’ in the morning and also another job interview in Covent Garden. No idea what to expect this time as the agency is keeping me in the dark, so fingers crossed!!

MA Graphic Design Show

The Postgraduate show ends this Thursday (as in tomorrow) so you should get down there as soon as you can to see all the talented young designers and their work before it’s too late!

The show was absolutely packed on Friday opening night, it was a shame that in the end it was closed an hour early because of the bad weather, but it was a great atmosphere and so much to see. I’ve had to make a return trip to make sure I get to see everything before it closes.

Seb Lester – Keep it Simple

I’ve had this bookmarked for a while and while clearing through old browser bookmarks and folders I’ve decided it’s time to buy.
It’s a bit of a weird coincidence actually, because for those of you who have been following me for a while you will remember me writing this post waaaay back in January when I started my MA at university, and now I have (re)found this poster when I’m about to finish my MA.

I get my final grade on the 6th December, I am so completely nervous, but if I get the mark I want (I’m not saying what it is…) I’ll consider this poster a present from me, to me!

To get a copy for yourself skip over to the Keep Calm Gallery and for just £25 this Seb Lester print can be yours too!

Grow Your Own Seed Packaging

A seed packaging concept made by a couple of students from the Royal College of Art London. Adam Paterson and Santi Tonsukha had this to say about their project…

“Research showed that users didn’t use all the seeds in a pack at once. The new packaging is easily re-sealable. Insights also suggested that an allotment grower generally doesn’t want to grow/eat a large number of crops of the same variety. The new packaging can hold a variety of seeds, separately, in one pack, utilizing the corrugated structure of the cardboard as natural dividers.”

Very clever (and very pretty) the seeds are in resealable packets and some of them are included in “tape” that can be measured out to length and then potted or planted.

Some really lovely work on Adam’s website, be sure to head over and rummage through his projects!

Ligature, Loop & Stem

Gorgeous poster from Ligature Loop and Stem

Aside from being a purely creative outlet devoid of typical restrictions (such as clients), one of the goals for anything produced under the Ligature, Loop & Stem moniker is that it educates as well as inspires. This piece scratched an itch for us in wanting to have a quick reference for letterform characteristics — in essence, so we can all speak the same language when talking about type.

Although we’d seen similar diagrams in books, we wanted something that felt more modern. To that end, we purposefully selected two type families which balanced that desire while keeping one foot in the past, reflecting the historical content of the piece’s subject matter.

Continue over to Underconsideration to read more from the designers and see more pictures of the project in progress. So much detail has gone into the production of this poster, it’s no wonder it’s sold out now… pity for us, but great for them!
